Activities of the Canton, GA Lions Club.
Helping others:
- Eyeglass Collection and Mission efforts. In 2008, our club collected and prepared for delivery to people in India and Belize over 5,000 pairs of eyeglasses. Since smaller eyeglasses for children are the hardest to acquire, special effort was made to meet their needs. Delivery was provided by teams from a local church during mission trips.
- Assistance to blind people. In 2007, our club helped a local family acquire an assistance dog from a training facility in Florida.
- Vision assistance to local residents. Every year our club provides vision testing services to an average of 50 local citizens. During difficult economic times, the number of people needing vision testing assistance increases by at least 50%.
- We also recycle used hearing aids and cellphones.
- Star Student awards. Every year, in partnership with the Woodstock Lions club, the top academic students from every high school in Cherokee county are recognized in a special Star Student award ceremony. The teachers these students respect most for their academic excellence are also recognized.
Fund Raising to support our charitable activities.
- For several years, our club has teamed up with the Cherokee Arts Council to host the annual Canton Festival of the arts.
- Each Fall, at the annual Riverfest event, our club sells rides on our Canton Express model railroad.
- We also take the Canton Express railroad, including the track, to Collins, GA to assist our sister Lions Club at their Fall Festival.
